据文献记载,伶和优大致产生于春秋时代,俳和倡大致产生于战国时代,其出现有先后之别。从表演功能方面看,他们最初也颇有不同,倡主要是司唱,伶主要是司造乐器及掌管乐律,俳与倡虽同样司舞,但亦有细微的区别。此四者的出现,还与春秋战国时期大变革的社会背景有一定关系。
