“远志”名称由来已久。《本草纲目》载“此草服之能益智强志,故有远志之称”。通常以远志或卵叶远志等植物的干燥根人药,主咳逆伤中,补不足,除邪气,利九窍,益智慧,耳聪目明,不忘,倍力,久服轻身不老。现代研究证明远志具有镇咳祛痰、镇静催眠、降压、改善脑功能、促进体力和智力、抗炎、抗诱变等作用。

马缨丹是马鞭草科植物,又叫五色梅、臭草、如意草,是一种多年生直立或半藤状灌木。它的茎四棱形,常具倒钩状皮刺,单叶对生,叶揉烂后有臭味,花序头状,花色多变。根、叶、花可作药用,有清热解毒、散结止痛、祛风止痒之效,可治疟疾、肺结核、颈淋巴结核、腮腺炎、胃痛、风湿骨痛等,但其枝叶及未熟果有毒,人畜误食后会造成慢性肝中毒。
